Heavy Tungsten Alloys for Medical Shielding X-Ray
To discuss your Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA) requirements for medical, shielding, X-ray or imaging applications – contact the experts at Edgetech. We look forward to working with you on your next project!
Why use WHA for medical applications?
Primarily due to the high density of Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA), almost twice that of lead, one of the many benefits of this high density material is its inherent ability to attenuate specific wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. Tungsten and WHA are of course naturally opaque and therefore unaffected by light, and this property extends well beyond the visible spectrum and into the energy spectrum, such as ionizing radiation.
What is ionizing radiation?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Ionizing radiation is energy released by atoms that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves (gamma rays or X-rays) or particles (neutrons, beta or alpha). The spontaneous decay of atoms is called radioactivity, and the excess energy released is a form of ionizing radiation.”
WHA in Medical X-ray Shielding Applications
WHA is ideal for medical X-ray shielding applications. Non-Ferrous alloys pure tungsten with calculated weight percentages of iron and/or nickel (usually). Dedicated mill runs for custom alloys are available – contact Non-Ferrous to discuss!
Tungsten alloying makes it easier for Non-Ferrous to produce the complex shapes and forms developed by design engineers for critical medical devices and technologies. Due to WHA’s excellent radiation management capabilities, these alloys are used in advanced radiation therapy as well as diagnostic medical practices. Collimators (including multi-leaf variants) also benefit from the complex shape and mechanical properties of the WHA
