Boron nitride has strong thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, good insulation performance, and is also corrosion-resistant and high-temperature resistant. Hexagonal boron nitride has good corrosion resistance to acidic and alkali metals and glass slag, and neither wets nor reacts to most metal melts such as iron, aluminum, titanium, copper, silicon, etc., as well as gallium arsenide, crystal stone, glass melt, etc. However, boron nitride contains B2O3, which is hygroscopic. If it is heated rapidly during use, the adsorbed water will evaporate rapidly, resulting in cracks and damage to the product.

In the horizontal continuous casting process of steel, the boron nitride ring acts as a separation ring. Molten steel is injected into the crystallizer from the tundish, and the boron nitride ring is located at a specific position in the crystallizer. When the molten steel passes through, it uses its own good corrosion resistance to the molten steel to solidify the molten steel on its surface and gradually cool and pull it out to form a steel section (such as round, square, etc.). The advantages of using boron nitride rings in steel smelting are as follows:

Withstand temperature differences and corrosion: Able to withstand temperature differences of more than 1,000 degrees, which is very important for the transition between high-temperature molten steel (generally molten steel temperature is around 1,500-1,600°C) and relatively low-temperature external environments. Moreover, boron nitride has a strong resistance to molten steel corrosion, ensuring the service life of the separation ring in harsh environments.

Reusable: Unlike some disposable parts, boron nitride rings can be reused many times. This not only reduces material costs but also reduces the time for replacing parts during production and improves production efficiency.

Non-Ferrous Crucible Inc. is a global advanced ceramic manufacturer. Our Boron Nitride ceramic products offer excellent thermal shock resistance and high-temperature resistance up to 2000°C. They also have excellent chemical inertness and resistance to acid and alkali corrosion.
